Individual Memberships FAQs
Getting Started
What is an individual membership and what benefits do I get?
Individual memberships support the Free Law Project's mission and provide enhanced access to CourtListener tools. Benefits vary by tier — you can see the full breakdown at free.law/membership.
What's the difference between an individual membership, EDU membership, and group membership?
- Individual memberships are paid memberships available to anyone who wants to support the Free Law Project and access enhanced features.
- EDU memberships are complimentary memberships for faculty, students, and researchers with a valid
.eduemail address, and need to be renewed every 6 months via a reminder email that will be sent. - Group memberships are paid memberships for organizations that want to provide benefits to multiple people, managed through a single administrator account.
How do I sign up for an individual membership?
You can sign up in two ways:
- Fill out the membership form directly at donate.free.law/forms/membership
- Log into your membership portal at donate.free.law and click on the Memberships tab.
For detailed steps on either option, see Adding a Paid Individual Membership to an Existing Account.
Account Linking
Why do I need a membership account? How is it different from my CourtListener account?
CourtListener is where you access legal data and tools. We use a CRM to manage donations, contact information, memberships, and more via a portal at donate.free.law. When you created your CourtListener account, a corresponding membership/donation account was automatically created using your email address — but you'll need to set your portal password separately, as it isn't linked to your CourtListener password.
I have a membership but my CourtListener account isn't showing the benefits — what do I do?
- Check your membership portal and make sure that you have a valid membership.
- Do your membership portal and CourtListener account use the same email address? If not, change the email address on one of them. If this doesn't fix it, contact us and provide your email address and CourtListener username.
- If your membership is part of a group membership, contact your group administrator to confirm that the membership is still valid and that you are listed as a member of the group. If they are unable to fix the issue, they can contact us.
Membership Swag Credits
If your membership benefits include swag credits, you will receive an email with the credits after your membership has been active for three months. Swag credits are redeemable in our swag store. If you have questions regarding your swag credits, contact us and include "Swag Credits" in the subject line.
