How fast is the RECAP extension when it uploads something?

In general, when the extension uploads a PDF or HTML file to the RECAP Archive, it will be available and ready in CourtListener within a second or two.

There are a few things that can cause delay:

  1. If you upload a document before we have filing metadata for that document, we don't know what case the document is a part of. When this happens, we set aside the document until the filing information is available. We call such documents "orphan documents" since they lack parents to associate with.

  2. If our systems are overloaded or if we are doing maintenance, your upload goes into a queue where it waits to be processed. The queue rarely takes more than a few minutes.

  3. Very large HTML uploads with hundreds or thousands of filings or attorneys take time to process, but usually finish within about a minute. It's possible to refresh the docket sheet in the middle of this merging process and see it partially completed.

Taken together, your uploads should be ready within a minute or two unless we lack needed metadata or are doing maintenance on the system.
